What does my IP address reveal?

Your public IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is visible to every website you visit. It can reveal your approximate city, region, country, and your ISP's name — but not your exact home address or personal identity.

There are two types of IP addresses: IPv4 (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and the newer IPv6 (e.g. 2001:db8::1). Most connections today use IPv4, though IPv6 adoption is growing rapidly worldwide.

Why does my IP location look wrong?

IP geolocation is based on ISP registration data, which may be out of date or point to your ISP's headquarters rather than your actual location. If you use a VPN, the location shown will be that of the VPN server, not your real location.

Why does my IP address change?

Most home connections use dynamic IP addresses assigned from a pool by your ISP. Your IP changes when you restart your router, or when your ISP rotates addresses. Static IPs cost more but remain constant, used by businesses and servers.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses like 192.168.1.1 - nearly all 4.3 billion have been allocated. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses supporting virtually unlimited devices. Most connections today use IPv4, though IPv6 adoption grows every year.

What is my IP address? +
Your IP is a unique number assigned by your ISP identifying your internet connection. It reveals your approximate city and ISP, but not your exact home address.
Why is my IP location wrong? +
IP geolocation uses ISP registration data which may point to a regional hub rather than your exact location. VPNs, mobile networks, and outdated data are the main causes.
Can someone find my home address from my IP? +
No. IP addresses reveal only approximate city-level location and ISP. Exact address lookup requires a legal request directly to your ISP.
How do I hide my IP? +
Use a VPN to route traffic through an encrypted server. Websites see the server IP instead of yours.
